01. The Overview

Keeping the World's Busiest Airport Moving

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, electrical reliability is inseparable from operational continuity. A prolonged loss of power can affect aircraft gates, baggage systems, passenger processing, and the movement of thousands of travelers.

The Airport Resiliency Project established an airport-wide backup power system capable of supporting terminals and concourses when normal utility service is interrupted. Distributed across the airport, the system provides 62.5 megawatts of on-site generation and a new level of protection for one of the world’s most operationally complex facilities.

02. The Challenge

Critical Power with Zero Interruption

Delivering redundant power across an active international airport required far more than purchasing and installing generators.

The project involved 100 generator units, each rated at 625 kilowatts, positioned at multiple locations across the airport. Every installation had to be integrated with existing electrical infrastructure while accommodating aircraft operations, secure-area access, passenger activity and the airport’s continuous operating schedule.

The team also had to coordinate complex permitting, emissions requirements, equipment procurement, utility interfaces, testing and commissioning, without compromising the systems the airport relied upon each day.

03. The CPS Story

Turning Complexity Into Coordinated Action

CPS helped translate a critical operational objective, keeping the airport functioning through a major power interruption, into a coordinated, executable program.

Working alongside airport stakeholders, AATC, Georgia Power, designers, contractors and operational teams, CPS supported owner-side coordination across the project’s many work locations and technical interfaces. The team helped maintain alignment among scope, schedule, budget and operational requirements while identifying issues that could affect installation, testing or airport activities.

CPS also helped connect technical decisions with their operational consequences. That owner-focused perspective supported informed decision-making and kept the project centered on its ultimate purpose: protecting the continuity of airport operations.

04. The Outcome

Powering Continuity When It Matters Most

The completed resiliency system provides 62.5 megawatts of distributed backup generation through 100 Tier 4 generator units.

Rather than relying on equipment that would have to be transported and connected after an outage, the airport now has permanent on-site generation positioned to support its terminals and concourses when normal electric service is unavailable.

The project strengthened the airport’s ability to respond to a major disruption, protect critical functions and recover operations more effectively, providing infrastructure designed around the reality that, at ATL, continuity matters every minute.
