SafeGate A/V Docking System

Delta Air Lines implemented the use of the Safegate Automated Visual Docking System at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This system recognizes and validates aircraft when approaching its assigned gate. Pilots are informed by a video display mounted on the terminal wall their distance from the stop bar as well as how to correct their approach. Automating the approach process allows Delta Air Lines to minimize overall time at the gate and further allows the aircraft ramp to be quickly cleared during a storm event.

CPS provided overall project management and logistics direction for the project. In addition to these responsibilities, CPS coordinated this project with the Passenger Boarding Bridge Replacement project. Both installations took place simultaneously to minimize gate downtime.

In addition to the coordinated construction, the Passenger Boarding Bridges and the Safegate Docking Systems work in tandem operationally. After installation, these systems had to be fully integrated and calibrated at each gate. The Safegate system allows for geospatial control of the Passenger Boarding Bridges for arriving aircraft. Onboard scanning lasers detect the position of the aircraft’s final parked position to send information to the Passenger Boarding Bridge’s controls. The final position of the bridge is then adjusted based on this information. CPS managed both projects with unique clients and teams to oversee the integration of these systems and reduce operational downtime.
